Benedict Nelson

British Baritone Benedict Nelson was an inaugural Harewood Artist with English National Opera. His recent highlights include Demetrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream at the Vienna State Opera (sadly cancelled due to the pandemic), Peter Maxwell DaviesEight Songs For A Mad King with the Pierrot Ensemble, Cover of Don Geronio with Glyndebourne Festival Opera, Bach’s St Matthew Passion with Dunedin Consort, Masetto in Don Giovanni with Nevill Holt Opera and Anfinomo with Longborough Festival Opera.

At ENO his roles have included Valentin in Faust, Demetrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream, Belcore in LElisir damore, Count in Le nozze di Figaro, Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Ping in Turandot, Evangelist/Watchful/First Shepherd in The Pilgrims Progress and the title role in Billy Budd.

Other engagements include the role of Algernon Moncrieff in The Importance of Being Earnest at Royal Opera House, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas at the Teatro Regio di Torino as well as the Salzburg Festival, the Verbier Festival and in Wiesbaden. He has also performed Ned Keene in Peter Grimes for Opéra de Lyon and Opera North, Silvano in Un ballo in maschera for Opera Holland Park, Don Giovanni for Silent Opera, Marcello in La bohème, Sid in Albert Herring and Tarquinius in The Rape of Lucretia for Angers Nantes Opera, Ananias in The Burning Fiery Furnace for Scottish Opera at Lammermuir Festival.

On the concert platform he has performed Stranger in The Lady from the Sea for Scottish Opera and Edinburgh International Festival and Melot and Steersman in Tristan und Isolde in concert with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, Vaughan Williams Sea Symphony with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, WaltonBelshazzars Feast and Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem with the Hallé and BBCSO, BrittenNoyes Fludde with La Maîtrise de Radio France, and WeillDas Berliner Requiem with LOrchestre Philharmonique de Radio France.

Nelson performed the role of Miles in Athropocene with Scottish Opera and covered the role of Figaro in Il Barbiere di Siviglia with Glyndebourne Festival Opera 2019. He also covered the roles of Demetrius in A Midsummer Nights Dream and Anfuhrer in Das Verratenes Meer with the Vienna State Opera in 2019 and in BirtwistleThe Mask of Orpheus and Philip Glass’ Orphée for ENO. Benedict recently stepped in the role of Jean in William AlwynMiss Julie for the BBC Symphony Orchestra, subsequently recorded and released by Chandos which received great critical acclaim.

Elsewhere on recording he can be heard performing Britten’s Songs and Proverbs of William Blake with Malcolm Martineau on Onyx, Brittens Canticle 4 with Ben Johnson, Christopher Ainslie and James Baillieu on Signum Classics, Purcell/Britten settings with Allan Clayton and Joseph Middleton on Champs Hill Records and as Henry Cuffe in the DVD of Sir David McVicars Gloriana from Teatro Real Madrid.

Upcoming engagements include Vaughan Williams Songs of Travel with Southbank Sinfonia and Jane Glover at St John Smiths Square, London.
